Vineyard Season 2026: What Workers Need to Know Before Applying

Everything a prospective vineyard worker needs to know before applying — from pay rates and contracts to the best regions in France, Germany and Italy and what to expect on arrival.

Vineyard Work in France, Germany and Italy in 2026 Every year, thousands of Bulgarians choose seasonal work in the vineyards of France, Germany and Italy, drawn by the opportunity to earn good income in a relatively short period of time. The harvest season typically begins in July for some early white grape varieties, with the main harvest running from late August through October depending on the region. Why Do So Many Bulgarians Choose Vineyard Work? For many people, the grape harvest is not just a work opportunity but also a kind of adventure. Workers spend several weeks or months in some of the most beautiful wine regions in Europe, meet people from different countries, and combine work with experiencing local culture. The main reason, however, remains the income. With standard employment, monthly wages often range between €1,700 and €2,500, and the most experienced and fast pickers can earn considerably more. Working on piece rates, good workers often reach €150–200 per day, especially during the peak weeks of the campaign. How Is the Work Paid? In viticulture, there are two main ways of working: Hourly – a fixed wage is received for hours worked. Piece rate – pay depends on the quantity of grapes harvested. Many employers combine both methods and offer productivity bonuses. Seasonal workers often also have the opportunity for overtime during the busiest days. Accommodation and Conditions One of the great advantages of the harvest season is that a large part of employers provide: Free or subsidised accommodation; Transport to the vineyards; Free food or at least one hot meal per day; Work clothing and equipment when needed. Some seasonal workers prefer a more independent lifestyle and travel with their own caravans, campervans or tents, which allows them to reduce costs and stay longer across different regions of Europe. The Most Popular Destinations in France France remains the undisputed favourite among Bulgarian seasonal workers. The wine regions of Champagne are particularly sought after. The most popular cities are: Épernay Reims There you will find some of the most famous vineyards and wine cellars in the world, and the demand for labour during the harvest is traditionally very high. Popular Wine Regions in Italy In Italy, most seasonal workers head to: Tuscany Piedmont Veneto Asti Verona These regions are known for producing high-quality wines and annually hire thousands of seasonal workers for the harvest. The Most In-Demand Regions in Germany Germany also offers many opportunities for seasonal work in viticulture, especially in the regions of: Rheinhessen Mosel Pfalz Trier Mainz The work is similar to that in France and Italy — picking grapes, sorting, loading crates and carrying out auxiliary tasks on the wine estates. What to Expect on the Ground The grape harvest is physical work. The working day starts early in the morning and often lasts between 8 and 10 hours. During peak periods it can be longer, especially if the weather is favourable and the harvest needs to be brought in quickly. Despite the workload, many Bulgarians return every year. The reason is simple — in one or two months they can save an amount that would be very difficult to earn in the same period in Bulgaria. In addition, seasonal work gives them the opportunity to visit famous wine regions, practise a foreign language and gain international work experience. Is It Worth It? For those who are not afraid of physical work, seasonal vineyard work in France, Germany and Italy remains one of the best opportunities for quick earnings in Europe. With good organisation, low accommodation and food costs, and high productivity, a successful season can bring several thousand euros in savings in just a few weeks of work.
